John McCallum- Coordinator

John McCallum- Coordinator

Who are you and what do you do for Near Neighbours?

My name is John McCallum and I am the Near Neighbours coordinator for the East Midlands, working through the St Philip’s Centre.

In my capacity as East Midlands coordinator I work across Leicester and Nottingham, supporting local communities and assisting projects. I also deliver education courses on inter faith awareness, and have developed a range of Near Neighbours toolkits on faith project development, fundraising, community research, and communications. On top of this I lead training workshops across the Near Neighbours network.

What have you done in the past?

With 30 years’ experience in faith based community development I have worked across the UK in community outreach projects tackling social problems and inequalities, building partnerships with public sector agencies, supporting international development charities and project managing church heritage restoration and community centre building projects. I have a BSc in Environmental Studies and an MA in Inter Religious Studies with a particular interest in exploring how the Christian Church relates with confidence to an increasingly diverse society.

Why did you want to work for Near Neighbours?

I feel privileged to be part of Near Neighbours because, unlike many programmes, it cuts out bureaucracy and makes it simple for people in communities to get on and work with those around them. It is a motivating factor for me to meet so many people from a wide range of faith and ethnicities who are passionate about their neighbours and are determined to bring positive change to their neighbourhoods.
