Financial Inclusion and Credit Unions

Together Lancashire is concerned  about the issue of poverty, debt, pay day loans and rent to buy shops that blight the lives of so many local people.

We welcome the Archbishop of Canterbury's initiative to support credit unions and other modes of fair finance and are in close touch with the To Your Credit network. Eventually we hope to establish a post of Credit Union Champion for Lancashire.

Locally we have convened meetings of  Credit Unions and community finance initiatives to exchange information and ideas.

These include

In Preston we work closely with the City Council who are promoting Credit Union development, and delivering money management courses in UPA neighbourhoods.

Leyland Churches Together Group: Every Tuesday afternoon between 2-3pm, a group of volunteers from Leyland churches run a collection point for Unify Credit Union at Leyland URC. MORE INFORMATION

In November 2014 with help from the Council and the Preston Faith Forum we organized an interfaith day conference on "Faith and Finance".

Across the county we are encouraging churches to support credit unions, debt counselling and budgeting courses. Several churches in our network are linked with Christians Against Poverty and provide their services in Preston, South Ribble, Fleetwood, Blackburn and Clitheroe.

We also encourage people to become involved with Church Action on Poverty who have a strong record of campaigning and empowerment on these issues.
