Frugal Lunch: A step-by-step guide

Step 1: Pick a date and gather friends, colleagues or church members to join!

Step 2: Register your event at and we’ll send you your Frugal Lunch Pack. This includes placemats, collection box, prayer cards and information about CUF.

Step 3: Choose a location. Maybe talk to your vicar about using the church hall, use your own home or a local community hub.

Step 4: It’s time to think about the food! What are you going to eat and where will you get the food from? Perhaps a good place to start is by looking in your fridge for leftovers, food about to go off or in clearance section of a Supermarket or perhaps to ask folks to bring along any excess food they have at home. From what you’re able to find cheaply, look for a simple soup or stew receipe to bring it all together, here’s an example of a Lenten Lentil Soup we’ve used before

Step 5: Spread the word far and wide. Invite church friends along, maybe invite another local church along. Just bring along anyone you’d like to share a meal with. Get an announcement out at church a few weeks before.

Step 6: Set up the tables using your Frugal Lunch placemats that will have come in the post. Make sure everyone gets a prayer card, too!

Step 7: Get cooking, eating, and enjoying each other’s company!

Step 8: Devise a scheme to ensure you can avoid washing up duties.

Step 9: Donate the money to CUF either through the post or by giving us a call.
